Child Playing with PuzzleThe philosophy of the program has been very firmly established and continues today as it was established in 1972.  This is detailed in the program book, Children are People, which was developed by the program committee of the board and included expertise from Ball State University professors.  The program book was last revised in 1991.   In 1998, Huffer received Accreditation from the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs – A program of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.  Huffer became a Ball State University Professional Development School in 1999.

Increased funding over the past years has enabled Huffer’s child care center to function near capacity.  Huffer is currently licensed for 170 children ages six weeks to 12 years of age.  We serve approximately 125 preschoolers and 30 school age children (before and after school).  A summer program also provides a “Day Camp” for up to 40 school age children.

In 1992, the Delaware County Special Education Cooperative began utilizing Huffer as a site to provide preschool speech therapy services.  Preschool education services for children from the Special Education Cooperative between the ages of 3-5 years were contracted beginning in 1994. This program has grown to provide inclusive early childhood education and extended day child care for those families who need it.  A variety of therapy services are provided on site by Co-op personnel.

Providing quality child care to the following years

Infant/Toddler Care – 6 weeks – 3 years

Huffer started infant care in January 2011.  Huffer providers “Continuity of Care”   for infants and toddlers.  What this means for Huffer and for our families and your children is that your child be paired up with a primary caregiver in the same classroom over an extended period of time.  Children and families will be able to form strong attachments to their peers and caregivers and instead of the children moving up to the next room at their birthday, the room environment changes around the children.  When it is time to move up to the 3 year old classroom, children will move with their peers into their new classrooms.

Preschool – 3- 5 years

We offer a developmentally appropriate inclusive preschool program for children ages 3-5.    Our classrooms offer center, play based activities throughout the day that enhance and support kindergarten readiness skills.  Research shows that children learn best through play and our dedicated teaching staff creates numerous play based experiences in which children experience the world around them.

School –age  5 – 12 years

We offer two unique programs for our school age population.  A Before and After School Program and a summer enrichment day camp.  Our Before and After School program offers nutritious meals and snacks, child initiated activities, homework help, outside playtime and math and reading enrichment.  The Summer Enrichment Day Camp program engages children throughout the summer with highly qualified staff in an active learning environment.  The School-agers participate in educational field trips throughout the community with place like:  Minnestrista, Muncie Children’s Museum and Indiana State Fair.
